The Kohala Peninsula is named for Kohala, the oldest volcano on the Big Island, now extinct. This is a remarkably varied region, with verdant green forest to the north, interior grassy plains, and lava desert along the arid west coast. This Kohala Coast contains the districts of South and North Kohala, stretching from the northern boundary of Kona to the northwestern tip of the island. South Kohala is famous for its luxury resorts, gourmet restaurants, year-round sunny and dry weather, and the best white sand beaches on the island. The district of North Kohala is a much more rural region steeped in Hawaiian history. As one drives north, the windswept coast gives way to lush countryside surrounding the town of Hawi and beyond. In North Kohala the whale watching is unsurpassed, as are the views of Maui to the north, the volcanoes of Mauna Kea and Hualalai to the south, and the Hamakua Coast to the east.
