kona_map     Kona hugs the southwestern coastal slopes of the huge 13,679 ft. Mauna Loa volcano. This region's one main road, Hwy. 11, passes through an upslope rather than coastal area dotted with small villages. It is a rural agricultural region of undulating green hillsides, colorful tropical foliage and panoramic oceanviews, renowned for its Kona coffee fields, macadamia nut orchards and organic fruit and vegetable farms. Its most popular coastal region is lovely Kealakekua Bay, famous for its unparalleled fine snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving, and as the site of the demise of explorer Captain James Cook. Another remarkable coastal area is beautiful Puuhonua O Honaunau National Park, the ancient Hawaiian Place of Refuge.
